It sounds like it cost you 3 or 4 days of frustration and a few hundred for the tow. My last run-in with the bastards at the tow lot was when I was on vacation, a new neighbor had reserved curbside space where my car was parked, and my car was towed. Luckily my friend who was watching the car noticed within a few hours and went to get it. IIRC, it was in custody less than 12 hrs and it still cost me $700. I can't say I gladly paid it but at least I got my car back. The new solution is to make sure my car is parked off street (like at my office) if I'm going out of town. I'm sorry you lost the time but on the bright side, you won't have to pay for parking anymore if you move the car out of the city. What was the total cost in time and money? $125 for the tow and $50 for the bike rentals? Plus $22 for the DMV?

  This really sucks, I’ve been there more than I’d like to admit. Curious why you didn’t just pay your registration though...your lack of a permanent address is kinda irrelevant. No matter what, the Jeep is still registered to your previous/current address. It’s not like the registered address just goes blank if you don’t pay your tags. Regarding smog, they give you a month to get a smog test once you pay the fees, and temporary tags until then. The DMV Registration tags expiring, that's on him. He can't blame the city, state, etc. for that. Renewing registration is key, because if any minor incident happens, you're facing serious problems -- which was the root of origin of the problems here (the stamp was a little coincidental bad luck).  I once had my car stolen by the city, back in the old city tow days when it wasn't administered directly by the city. Car was stolen from a legit parking spot. During the tow, they broke the fuel line. So not only did I have to pay $400 (1996 dollars) to get it out, I had to pay for a tow truck to haul out my now-broken car. PITA. A good idea. Someone should definitely take that on. I'm surprised no one has brought up that Bobby Lee thing. I remember in an episode of Tiger Belly that exact thing happened.
